Pad Thai

I recently had a week day at home. It was lovely! I slept in, washed some woollies, sat in the conservatory drinking coffee and generally enjoyed the hell out of not being at work.

And at 1pm, after a leisurely hot bath, I decided it was lunchtime.

A stroll up to the high street presented me with options. A kebab, fish & chips, one of those weird Chinese takeaways where everything is in bain maries in the window, KFC or the £4.95 lunchtime special at the local Thai place.

Funnily enough, the Thai place won handily.

I felt bad going in, because even though they were ostensibly open, they were in the middle of staff lunch, and they hurried to pack away their plates to serve me. So much inconvenience for £5.

I ordered pad thai. It arrived beautifully presented, covered in an eggnet and with a wedge of lemon. It tasted as good as it looked. Succulent chicken, bean shoots and cubes of tofu cuddled up to the chewy noodles. I could have kept eating and eating. I felt sorry for the schmucks who were queuing at KFC.

I've never seen pad thai presented like that. It's one of my favorites though.

That egg net is so cool! I've never seen anything like that before!

As many Thai restaurants I've frequented, I've never seen an eggnet either! Aren't no-office workdays absolutely life-affirming? :)

HH - I know! I wasn't expecting such a special-looking special.

Esi - I've seen it done in a very fancy Thai cookbook that I've got.

Joie - isn't it pretty? I'd love to try it at home.

Marie - No-office workdays are the best. But now I really resent it being Monday and having to be at work!

Sounds like a gloriously decadent day. Color me envious! I covet your eggnet.

Aren't days off great!

I can't understand why anyone would go to KFC with somewhere as good as this just across the road.

I've never seen Pad Thai presented like that either, it looks fantastic! Pad Thai is one of my favourites. And as for KFC, no way.

Rachel - I got to play with my kitten too. It was great!

Sam - I don't even know how that KFC stays open. There are so many better options!

GW - I don't often have pad thai, but I do love it.

I have to find a good Pad Thai this weekend. I love local places with nice surprises like that -- my local area is thin on the ground for anything except non-Chinese Chinese so I sometimes roam other people's localities for their hidden secrets.
