Welcome 2013

Happy New Year everyone! We welcomed the New Year in our traditional manner, cooking something delicious at home. And this year's meal was the same as last year's - a wild mushroom fondue. I think two years in a row counts as a tradition, don't you? I didn't quite make it to midnight. At midnight I was lying in bed with the curtains open watching the fireworks in the sky.

A wise woman said to me recently "Our approach to learning colours our lives and our interactions with others, if we feel defensive about it, then it stresses us. It's hard to avoid feeling we have to present selves as all competent & all knowing adults, but Beginner’s Mind is more fun." Which I thought was brilliant. So, my resolution for this year is to approach things with openness and Beginner's Mind. Not that I have entirely figured out what form that will take, but I do have a lot to learn about so many things.

That sounds an admirable resolution, and one you should have no difficulty sticking to. I hope you both have a good year!

Happy New Year. The wild mushroom fondue sounds like a good way to end / start the year. Not sure I really understand the words of wisdom though?

I am digging that fondue! I'll try to take a more open beginner's approach to learning, too. Best wishes for 2013!

Thank you! I am not very wise and my mind is often quite closed, but this is something that comes from Zen Buddhist traditions. I participate in a Tai Chi class and there is always a little philosophy and meditation. I guess I just absorb a bit at a time as I go. I just had a look on the net and If you google Beginners Mind, you will find lots of references to it, better explained than by me. Happy New Year !

I like the thought of the beginner's mind as it connotes a child-like curiosity and open-mindedness.

Happy new year and I hope it's a great one for you.

Happy New Year, Alicia! Good thoughts. I have started recent years with the plan to learn something new, sometimes I knew what it would be, sometimes not. I think it is a good frame of mind. May your plans realize, whatever they are.

I love this post. I often tell my yoga students to "approach this pose with your beginner's mind, as though you have never done this before, and find out what is here for your today". It's a good way to live life, and helps us to approach everything with presence and an open mind.

I too was in bed at midnight watching the neighbours fireworks through the window.

Hope you have a wonderful year, and I think mushroom fondue (how divine is that?) two years in a row definitely counts as a tradition :-)

Happy New Year! I love the idea of approaching things with the beginner's mind - I am so bad at giving up on things if I can't do them straight away, maybe keeping this in mind will help...
