Sunday Dinner

We tend to buy meat in bulk - we'll order half a lamb, cut into pieces, or a quarter pig, or a selection of slow-cooking cuts. The savings from buying in bulk mean that we can get really high quality, high-welfare meat, which we also prefer.

The problem with this scheme is that sometimes the cuts are too big for a couple to get through. And so it was that last Sunday we went over to visit friends, bearing a 2.4kg (5lb) leg of organic Devon lamb that we'd never be able to eat alone. A bit of salt, a bit of pepper and into a moderate oven for 3 hours. It threw off so much fat that we couldn't make gravy, but roast potatoes, asparagus, carrots & cauliflower cheese were all present. These friends eat early on a Sunday evening so that their small hurricane can eat with them, so we had the very great pleasure of sitting around a dining table having a really proper traditional Sunday roast dinner. It was lovely.

  1. Lovely roast. I'm so glad we got a freezer so we can buy big cuts of meat & store it

  3. Kat - One of the most exciting things about moving into this house was finding the chest freezer in the garage!

Heather - lamb is excellent. I have been surprised to find that a lot of Americans don't care for it.

  4. Sometimes when I'm in the market, I dream of a chest freezer. But then we'd have to buy the apartment next door to house it. That seems extreme even for my greed. Envy :)

  6. Oh memories- my grandparents were sheep farmers, then beef farmers and always used to come and visit with a large roast. Love the Sunday roast.

  7. I'm a bit of a bulk buyer too. That roast looks gorgeous and sounds heavenly. Which reminds me, it has been far too long since I've had cauliflour cheese...

  8. Dee - yes, a second apartment just for your freezer would be a bit over the top!

    Natashya - will do!

Jacki - one of my first flatmates had family on the land; made university life much cheaper when there was free meat in the freezer!

Laura - cauliflower cheese is excellent.

  9. I buy meat in bulk too when I can, I'm still working my way through half a lamb that I bought straight from the farm.

I like to know where my food comes from and it's cheaper too!

  10. Sam - it's reassuring isn't it? And the farmers are probably getting a much better price when you go directly.
