Turkey blackbean chilli

In Sydney many years ago there was a chain of Tex-Mex places called Arizona's. That's right. Tex-Mex = Arizona. They made superb margaritas and let you shell peanuts right onto the floor and it was the first place I ever had a turkey chilli in a taco bowl.

Recently Joe at My Cooking Quest (the one I got those evil choux paste gnocchi from) has been working on some chilli variations which have looked so good that I got a craving. But instead of the careful spicing he has been doing - I took the easy way out.

Turkey Blackbean Chilli

Soak half a bag of black turtle beans in a lot of water overnight. I am a huge fan of the canned pulse, but this is not the time.

Sautee a diced onion and quite a lot of garlic in a little olive oil (we use a Le Creuset dutch oven for this), then add 500g turkey breast mince and brown well. When the meat is well browned, add a sachet of chilli seasoning, a good shake of Tabasco Chipotle sauce, a tablespoonful of sweet paprika, a can of chopped tomatoes and a can of water. Add the drained, rinsed beans. Cook for about an hour, covered, stirring occasionally until the beans are tender.

Serve with a lot of grated cheese, sour cream and salsa.

  1. That chili gets a thumbs up from this native Texan! I love the fact that you used turkey instead of ground beef--much healthier! The black beans are a nice addition, too (although beans are a controversial topic in the chili universe--some people insist that true chili does not contain beans, but most recipes call for beans. I personally like the beans).

  6. Sam - it's not much of a recipe, but feel free. I used the Discovery chilli seasoning. And that chipotle tabasco is fantastic!

  13. Black turtle beans, hey? Never heard of them and I'm off to hunt some down. Looks lovely, and I can adapt it easily to meatless and pop a little avocado and tomato salsa on top.

  16. Ooh, yummy! We had a place here that let you throw peanut shells on the floor. It was such a cheap thrill, but I loved it. So did my five year old, which tells you how mature I am.

  17. I love black beans,(and chilli) there is a new-ish mexican place back home called Flying Fajita Sisters which uses black beans everywhere, and they are great! I haven't seen them canned in Australia either, though I have heard you can get them, perhaps from good fruit & veg shops.

  21. Thanks everyone - I still feel slack that I used packet seasoning! As my mother says - the black turtle beans (as distinct from fermented black soy beans) are something I found out about from Delia Smith. Great colour - a really dark purple - they make everything else glow!
