Fruits of our labour

On Monday we ate the first fruits of the harvest. To be precise, our first courgette. I think eating the first fruits instead of sacrificing it means that our crops will be blighted unto the seventh generation but it is a chance I am prepared to take.
We opened a suitably festive bottle of wine (cropped really closely because you could see the box of washing powder on the bench behind it).
And we pan-fried some really good rump steaks, adding the courgette to take advantage of the beefy, olive oily juices, seasoning well with some of the pasta seasoning I bought last year in Florence (chilli, garlic, parsley, chervil and salt).

Delicious. The flesh of the courgette was dense, creamy and infinitely better than shop-bought. Hope the plant starts to get a bit serious now - 1 courgette doesn't make much of a meal. Or a harvest!

Even though it was small, and doesn't quite make a meal, isn't it so exciting {and gratifying}! Congrats. I love gardens.

In a short time you will be asking for suggestions for what to do with the courgette glut. (And you can present the jumbo one that is sure to hide under a leaf to the local church for Harvest Festival.)

I'm sure you'll get more than one, they tend to grow so many you don't know what to do with them, well except my plant which died after just producing 3 this year

We've been expecting a glut, but our 3 plants have only been producing 1 flower at a time - and these are sexual reproducers so you need the male and female flowers.

You grow your own courgettes! I'm so jealous because all we have is a wee balcony :(

Uhm, are you not meant to eat the first fruit then?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_fruits - nope - first produce from the harvest is supposed to go to your god.

We are very lucky to have a good-sized garden!
